KAIST Xtensa Project - SoC Design Technology

Project Objective

KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) main objective for the SoC Design Technology Center is to promote the spread of SoC Platform and the diffusion of new SoC architectural methodologies so domestic design companies can easily access the SoC field. SoC center establishes SoC Platform with verified hardware and software IPs, educates industrial engineers on Platform Base and architectural thesis to make something useful of the the center, and finally facilitate SoC development. Selecting Tensilica Xtensa LX is our long term roadmap.

Project Details

  • Single Processor Based SoC Platform
  • Multiple Processor Based SoC Platform
  • Co-Design Environment
  • Configurable SoC Platform (Xtensa)

Project Goal for Xtensa

  • Low cost platform
Fully exploit domestic design technology and resources both in academic and commercial area
Maintain inexpensive loyalty IPs to minimize cost
  • User friendly platform
    Supply user friendly platform
    Provide sufficient technical reports
Suggest proper design methodology for domestic companies
Provide directly applicable platforms for H.264, 3D Graphics, etc.
  • Localization of core IPs
Construct platforms which embed domestic processors and programmable DSP
Develop and integrate high performance on-chip-bus structure
Aggressively adopt domestic EDA Tools and prototyping systems

Project Status

  • Building and verifying configurable platform using Xtensa
  • Licensed HiFi 2 TIE for audio codec development
