Computer Peripherals

Tensilica’s Xtensa processors are used in a wide array of computer peripheral designs, including printers, scanners, high-resolution displays, wireless network devices, and high-capacity storage, to both decrease design time and reduce design risk by adding programmability. Xtensa processors can be used both as a system controller and a DSP in many designs, such as servo control. Xtensa processors can be designed especially for computer peripheral applications to provide high-speed data throughput. By bypassing the bus and using the unique Ports and Queues capabilities, the Xtensa LX2 can achieve RTL-equivalent data throughput. Multiple Xtensa processors are often used throughout many stages of the processing chain, particularly in ink jet and laser printers where multiple processors can be employed for various functions such as color-space conversion, edge enhancement, and error diffusion.

Tensilica’s Xtensa processors are ideal for many wireless applications where existing processor performance is inadequate yet hard-wired solutions are too inflexible. For example, simple optimizations let Xtensa 6 processors achieve an 11x speed-up in a GSM audio codec. Tailored instructions provided a 250x speed improvement in a Viterbi decoding algorithm. And Xtensa processors power world’s first digital broadcast-enabled mobile phone from LG Electronics.

Networking

All types of networking equipment, from SOHO devices (e.g. switches, VoIP terminals, wireless adaptors) to enterprise infrastructure equipment (e.g. routers, gateways, storage area networks) use Tensilica’s Xtensa processors, most frequently in the data plane. Data processing functions such as filtering, coding, and encryption are performed real-time in networking equipment. Tensilica processors are utilized in these demanding applications due to the ability to configure custom data paths and execution units. Some examples of Tensilica technology in networking integrated circuits include TCP/IP off-load engine, multi-protocol security accelerator, G.729A codec, and high-speed serial interface. Xtensa processors are also ideal for applications where throughput is critical and multiple data streams must be quickly processed. One customer, Cisco Systems, used 188 Xtensa processors in their design of the world’s largest router.
