Today's home entertainment products are increasingly challenged to provide high-quality audio and high-definition video processing, as well as advanced communications functions. The higher the resolution, the more processing power required. Plus interactions with the Internet are bringing a multitude of new formats, creating challenges for video encoding/decoding, video post processing, and audio codec requirements.
For next-generation home entertainment products, you need efficient, high-performance functional blocks that are programmable to keep up with the latest standards. Tensilica processors are being employed in many places in the living room and throughout the house - see our customer examples, below.
We picked out four of the more interesting applications to give you more detail. Click on a picture below to see where Tensilica fits into these products:

In all three of these applications, Tensilica Dataplane Processors can be used for:
Sound is as important as the video image these days, and there are many audio input devices with audio streams that must be processed as efficiently as possible with the highest possible quality. That's why so many companies, including Intel, AMD, nVIDIA, Samsung, and more, have selected Tensilica's audio processors. See our complete line of audio DSPs.
Image quality is the first thing consumers notice in digital TVs. Tensilica offers the 388VDO, a proven turnkey SD video encode/decode solution that you can drop right into your next design. If you're designing for HDTV, Tensilica's DSPs can be used for video stream processing and video post processing for blocks such as scalars, de-interlacers and image filters. Plus, Tensilica's processors can provide the 2D and 3D graphic support required for games and to drive menus.
The challenging algorithms, such as Viterbi and Reed-Solomon decoding, deinterleaving, and derandomization, are no problem for \'Tensilica\'s. Wherever there are data streams that need to be quickly processed, you can customize Tensilica's Xtensa processors to exactly match and process those streams most efficiently.
Whatever type of communications processing you need, Tensilica's customers have probably already done it using customized Xtensa processors. Tensilica's processors are used in both the PHY and Mac layer processing for tasks including turbocoding, IFDM filters, FFT, and Viterbi engines. Tensilica's processors and DSPs are key building blocks for implementing radios such as WiFi, WiMedia and Bluetooth.
It's essentail to implement complex security algorithms in a processor in case these algorithms needs to be changed. These algorithms are often used for encryption throughout the system, so engineers can't pirate copyrighted media. You can design efficient encryption and description engines to handle Digital Rights Management (DRM) requirements for commercially distributed music and video with Tensilica's Xtensa processors. This way they'll be programmable, so as standards change you can make your updates in firmware.
Tensilica's efficient Xtensa architecture is also ideal to use as the main application processor, controlling all of the other subsystems in your design.
Each subsystem often requires an embedded processor. Why not stay with Tensilica, and use either Diamond Standard or Xtensa processors to do the subsystem control?
