Today, “smart” devices are everywhere – in your home and with you on the road. What really distinguishes the quality of these devices are the special functionalities built into them – the quality of the video and audio, the speed of the baseband processing, the levels of security, etc. These functions let your home entertainment centers, smartphones, computers, game consoles and tablets approach theater-quality standards. Yes, today’s electronic offerings are all about the user experience—the “Wow factor” that turns “me too” products into “must-haves”.
The enabling functions on these devices are controlled by highly specialized processors that sit alongside the central applications processor, often on the same chip. These specialized processors – aka dataplane processor units (DPUs) – are extremely small and consume very little power, yet they perform at ever-increasing speeds. Each DPU can be tailored to an exact application with absolutely no waste – of power, area, or performance.
A one-size-fits-all strategy for processors that are designed into chips is outdated. The problem is the data flow through the processor. Different types of data streams need to be processed differently depending on the application – audio, video, networking, security, baseband.
Cadence applies the latest in Cloud-enabled automation techniques to allow the Tensilica DPUs to be easily modified for the exact application requirements. We use this same technology to create standardized solutions that can still be further customized for baseband and audio processing. We also provide the complete solution – not just processor IP – so you can get the software and reference design information you need to quickly design our IP into your chip designs.
